Celebrate International Rosé Day with Big Wines Big Art. Interesting facts about the favorite wine of the summer

Summer is in full swing 🌞, cozy gatherings at home have moved from warm homes to summer terraces, picturesque parks and illuminated coasts of rivers, lakes and seas. Light, varied summer food, a glass of good wine will harmoniously complement relaxed conversations and distract from today's routine.
And what wine will you choose for your meetings with friends and relatives? Try the rosé. During hot summer evenings, a glass of chilled rosé is a symbol of lightness and carefreeness. With notes of citrus that give it a fresh acidity, the rosé wine is able to transport you to the atmosphere of a summer garden, where every sip is a memory of bright, pleasant days filled with laughter and joy.
It is very symbolic that the International Rosé Wine Day is celebrated in the summer. This holiday reminds us of the elegance and variety of rosé. The tradition of the celebration comes from Provence, the heart of rosé wine production. The idea to establish such a day belongs to Valerie Roussel, owner of Château Roubine and Château Sainte-Béatrice. The goal is to raise the profile of Provençal rosé wine and share its appeal with the whole world. The first celebration took place in 2018 and has since become an annual event, celebrated on the last Friday of June.

A few numbers
Global production of rosé wine has grown significantly over the period 2000-2021. This is evidenced by the research of the International Organization of Grapes and Wine (OIV).

France increased its share by 7.5 percentage points between 2000-2006 and 2014-2021, becoming the number one producer of rosé wine in the world with a share of 32% in recent years.

Noticeable growth in South Africa, Chile and Portugal (by 2.4, 2 and 0.2 pp between 2000-2006 and 2014-2021).

The ranking in absolute terms shows that the countries of the Northern Hemisphere made the largest contribution to the production of rosé wine in 2021. Among the three leading producers is France (6.5 million hl), followed by Spain (3.7 million hl) and the United States (3.4 million hl). These three countries together account for more than two-thirds of world production.

Turning to the ranking of the share of rosé wine in the total national production in 2021, Uruguay (37.1%) has a significantly higher percentage of rosé wine than the rest of the countries. Aromatic and flavor profile

Prized for its bright hues and refreshing properties, rosé wine offers a wide range of aromatic and flavor profiles. Rosé is made from different grape varieties, using several winemaking technologies. This gives us a wide range of tastes. And then we will tell you what you can find in your glass of rosé wine:

Aromatic profile

Fruit aromas 🍓

Red fruits: usually rosé wines smell of strawberries, raspberries, cherries and currants.

Citrus: notes of grapefruit, lemon and orange peel add piquant freshness to the wine.

Stone fruit: Some rosés can have hints of peach, apricot or nectarine, especially those made from Grenache or Mourvèdre grapes.

Floral notes 🌺

Rose Petals: Many rosé wines have a delicate aroma of rose petals, which makes them surprisingly romantic.

Hibiscus: More tropical rosé styles have hints of hibiscus.

Herbal and spicy shades 🌿

Herbs: Depending on the region and grape variety, rosé wines can have subtle herbal notes such as thyme, rosemary or even lavender.

Spices: notes of white pepper or anise add complexity to the aroma.

Flavor profile

Fruit flavors 🍒

Berry flavors: On the palate, rosé wines often continue a fruity theme with hints of strawberry, raspberry and cranberry.

Citrus and melon: in some rosés you can feel the flavors of watermelon, citrus, and sometimes a hint of melon.

Minerality and acidity

Mineral Notes: Some rosé wines, especially those from regions with limestone or shale soils, can exhibit a flint or stony minerality.

High acidity: Rosés tend to have high acidity, which gives them a crisp, refreshing taste and makes them great for pairing with a variety of foods.

Delicate sweetness

From dry to sweet: While most rosé wines are dry, some are made with residual sugar that balances acidity and enhances fruit flavors.

The appeal of rosé lies in the balance of acidity and fruitiness, and this makes it incredibly versatile. Floral and herbal aromas in the taste add depth and an interesting contrast to the fruity notes. This is a wine that can be enjoyed in a variety of situations, from picnics to formal dinners. With so many different styles of rosé, there's something for everyone, whether you prefer a crisp, dry rosé or a sweeter, fruity version.
