Trifon Zarezan in Odesa Region: Big Wines Supports the Preservation of Winemaking Traditions

In Bolhrad, Odesa region, the traditional ritual holiday of grape growers and winemakers - Trifon Zarezan - was celebrated.

This ancient tradition came to Ukraine from Bulgaria together with the Bessarabian Bulgarians and has been carefully preserved in southern Odesa region for over a century. On this day, grape growers sing ritual songs, offer prayers to the patron saint, bring ceremonial bread (kalach), symbolically prune the vines, and pour wine over them - for healthy growth, a generous harvest, and nature’s blessing.

The celebration carries special symbolism, as it is marked on February 14 and intertwines with Valentine’s Day. Trifon Zarezan embodies the love of grape growers and winemakers for the land, the vine, and, of course, for wine.

Nataliia Burlachenko, CEO of Big Wines and 46 Parallel, and Ricardo Núñez, owner of the international group of companies Vinos de La Luz, joined the celebration of this tradition. Their participation highlights the company’s respect for the historical roots of Ukrainian winemaking and its commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the region.

Preserving traditions passed down through generations is an essential part of Big Wines’ philosophy - because great wine is born from a deep love for the land.
